Some get it, some don’t

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008 - New Media

It’s really amazing how some people/entities get it and some don’t. I want to immerse myself in social/new media in my whole life, as well as a career. Why not do what you love? Well I have been convinced that Central PA is by no means a place to accomplish that.

Case in point, the York Daily Record (YDR). This is a newspaer that I have never read, but they did find me online at Twitter. I am on twitter on a daily basis. Some would argue too much. To me there is no such thing. It’s a way I can keep in touch with internet friends or contacts. I was surprised when the started following me on Twitter. Naturally I followed them as well. Well, it turns out the YDR is not interested in social networking. They use Twitter to spam followers about articles on their website.

Out local NBC affiliate is starting to get it. WGAL, recently added a new “web 2.0″ service. This is being heavily advertised during their news broadcasts. The basic premise is that they get local students to report from the games of their individual schools. The reports are then posted to a special website. This is a neat idea and it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

90.7 WXIN-FM in RI really gets it. Tonight I actually listened to the radio for the first time in a long while. You may ask if the stations are so bad in Central PA that I had to listen to a Rhode Island college station? That is not the case, but the stations here are pretty lacking. Actually my favorite singer Matthew Ebel was on live. Matt is an independent artist that just moved from Nashville to Boston. If you know me in any respect you know that I am a huge fan of his. I let the guy sleep on our couch! He was at the radio station promoting his new album Goodbye Planet Earth. The station has the forward thinking to air the whole broadcast on Ustream. This way, Matt’s fans around the globe can log in and check it out. This station gets why New Media can help them. Maybe it has to do with the fact that they are college radio, maybe because they are young, maybe because they are not mainstream.

Still, I am surrounded online by many great social/new media minds. I can’t help but think that I should be surrounded in real life by the same.

Connor on the drums

Sunday, February 10th, 2008 - Personal, Tech

Connor loves playing his drums along to the kids rock CD that his Uncle Paul burned for us. He likes Jump by Van Halen, Every Breath you Take by the Police, and I Love Rock N Roll by Joan Jett. I swear I had no part in pressuring hi at all! : )

This was recorded quickly with my webcam using Seesmic.com. It’s one of my new geeky addictions. *grin*

New Nursery

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 - Personal

Our new baby is due in a little less than a month. It’s been a long time coming but the room is finally painted and the carpet is picked up and installed. I also got to move the changing table in there and put the crib a friend gave us together.

iPhone and Mac Keynote thoughts

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 - Personal

Here I sit eating dinner at Panera, using the free wifi. Steve Job’s keynote was this afternoon and I totally didn’t follow it the way I usually do. Work is getting crazy, I have to bring my A-game now. Plus I took a long lunch to help Patty figure out what we could do with Connor, who was sent home sick from day care. We got a sitter just in time for me to make my 2:00 meeting. Man, I really need to do some work-from-home-New-Media gig fast!

I’ve spent a few days with my new iPhone. I must say I really like it. I am adding things to my calendar and can already tell that I can be more productive. Plus, mobile internet and twitter doesn’t bother me one bit.

Apple made a whole slew of announcements today. Maybe I will get to watch the keynote tonight, or tomorrow. The rumored ultra portable MacBook is now out and I have no envy what so ever. It’s not beefy enough for me to drool over, but I must say it looks pretty freaking cool. I must say I am way more excited about the iPhone firmware update. I can’t wait to get home from the Mac User’s group tonight to update.

2008

Saturday, January 5th, 2008 - Personal

Well a few days have gone by and I haven’t even blogged yet this year. In fact I still have pictures from Christmas on my camera that aren’t uploaded to flickr. I am hoping to make this year a really great one. I have been thinking about setting some goals, and not resolutions.

I would like to just be more responsible and productive. I really need to do the PDA thing and keep all my appointments straight. (iPhone anyone?) I would really like to grow my side business at www.pdotprod.com into something much larger. Really, what I need to do is get my stuff together in that respect. My mom is helping me out by giving me some business. I am in the process of what I think is going to be 1000 pictures scanned.

I want to finally take the Apple Certified Helpdesk test…

I would also really like to get the Podcast thing going and start getting more into New Media as a whole. I am thinking I want to hit up Podcamp Philly and Podcamp Pittsburgh this year. A lot if this stuff does depend on the next thing…

Connor is doing great and the new baby is on the way. My number one goal is to continue and improve being a good father/husband.
